Gantry Crane Inquiry Guide: 9 Specs That Get an Quote

Gantry cranes run on ground rails instead of building runways — which means the quote depends on a few specs an overhead crane inquiry doesn't have: cantilevers, travel distance and the rails themselves. Send the nine items below and our engineers return a configuration and budget price within 24 hours.

The 9 specifications, at a glance

Diagram of gantry crane parameters
#SpecificationUnit / optionsWhy it matters
1Lifting capacitytonsSizes hoist, girder and legs — the biggest price driver
2Girder configurationsingle / doubleSingle for economy; double for heavy loads, wide spans, hard duty
3Spanm (rail center to rail center)Determines girder and leg design
4Cantileverleft / right / both, length in mLets the hook serve areas outside the rails — decide it now, retrofitting is costly
5Lifting heightm (ground to hook, highest position)Sets leg height and hoist reeving
6Travel distancem — and do you need us to supply rails?Defines rail supply, conductor system and cable length
7Power supplyvoltage / Hz / phaseMotors, panel and certification built to your grid
8Duty cyclehours per day + % at full loadDetermines FEM/ISO duty class and component sizing
9Applicationwhat you lift, whereYard, precast, shipbuilding and scrap each pull different features

Three gantry-specific decisions worth thinking through

Cantilever or not?

A cantilever extends the girder past the legs so trucks can be loaded outside the rail track. If trucks, trailers or storage sit beside your runway, specify it now — the girder and legs are engineered around it.

Who supplies the rails?

Ground rails, fixings and end stops can ship with the crane or be sourced locally. Tell us the travel distance and whether you want rails included; either way we send the wheel loads your foundation designer needs.

Full gantry, semi-gantry or rubber tyred?

If one side of your bay already has a runway or wall, a semi-gantry crane can save serious money. If you need to move between yards without rails, look at rubber tyred gantry cranes. Still weighing up which type and size? Work through how to choose a gantry crane first — this guide is the next step. And if you're not sure what a gantry crane even is, start with what is a gantry crane.
