Two magnets with the same diameter can differ several times in real lifting performance — because a magnet's rating depends on what it grips, not just how strong the coil is. A magnet rated 10 t on solid slab may lift only a fraction of that in loose shredded scrap — air gaps between pieces cut magnetic flux dramatically. That's why we ask for shape and dimensions before quoting capacity, and why serious suppliers publish separate ratings per material type.
Standard magnets are designed for ambient loads. Handling hot blooms, billets or slag calls for high-temperature insulation classes and derated duty. If your material exceeds roughly 100°C, say so — steel mill duty is our home ground; see the special requirements of metallurgical cranes.
