Straddle Carrier: Definition, Operation, and Uses

container handling straddle carrier

What is a Straddle Carrier?

A straddle carrier is a specialized container handling equipment widely used in ports, container terminals, and logistics yards. It is designed to “straddle” containers, lifting them from above with a telescopic spreader and carrying them across the yard. Unlike forklifts or reach stackers, a straddle carrier lifts containers between its wheels, providing stability and flexibility in tight spaces.

What Does a Straddle Carrier Do?

The main functions of a straddle carrier include:

  • Loading and unloading containers from trucks or yard areas
  • Transporting containers within the terminal
  • Stacking containers, typically 2–4 units high, depending on design
  • Positioning containers for cranes

This versatility makes straddle carriers essential equipment in container logistics.

What is the Meaning of Straddle Carrier?

The term “straddle” refers to the way the machine positions itself on either side of a container. The straddle carrier lifts the cargo vertically and carries it between its legs, ensuring balance and efficient movement.

How Tall is a Straddle Carrier?

Straddle carriers vary in height depending on capacity and stacking requirements:

  • Standard machines can stack containers 1-over-2 (up to 3 containers high).
  • Larger models can reach 1-over-3 or 1-over-4, stacking up to four containers high, which equals about 38 ft (11.6 m) when handling 9’6″ high-cube containers.

How to Drive and Operate a Straddle Carrier

Driving and operating a straddle carrier requires specialized training. Operators are seated high in the cabin with a clear 360° view. Key aspects include:

  • Starting and maneuvering the diesel or electric-powered engine
  • Using hydraulic controls to lift and lower the spreader
  • Steering with precision in narrow terminal lanes
  • Monitoring safety systems such as cameras, alarms, and load indicators

Safe operation also requires:

  • Performing pre-operation checks (engine, tires, hydraulics)
  • Ensuring containers are properly aligned before lifting
  • Maintaining safe travel speeds (typically 5–7 km/h)
  • Using visual aids and sensors to prevent collisions

A Pictorial History of the Straddle Carrier

The straddle carrier concept dates back to the mid-20th century when ports needed faster ways to handle standardized ISO containers. Early versions were simple mechanical carriers, evolving into today’s advanced diesel-electric hybrids and fully electric models with automation and remote monitoring. Modern straddle carriers are now equipped with smart systems for efficiency and sustainability in global trade.

Kino Cranes: Quality and Manufacturing Standards

What sets Kino Cranes straddle carriers apart is the strict compliance with national and international manufacturing standards. Each machine is engineered according to GB/T3811-2008 Crane Design Specification, GB/T14406-2011 General Gantry Crane Standard, and GB6067-2010 Safety Regulations for Lifting Appliances, among many others. In cases where standards overlap, the higher-level requirement always prevails.

The steel structure is designed to withstand demanding working environments:

  • Working altitude: ≤ 2000 m
  • Ambient temperature: –20℃ to +55℃
  • Wind resistance: up to Level 7 in operation, Level 11 when parked
  • Duty classification: A5
  • Design life: 20 years
  • Adaptability: suitable for high-temperature, high-humidity climates, with sufficient lighting for night operations

Structurally, Kino Cranes straddle carrier is composed of four major assemblies:

  1. Wheel frame
  2. Operator cabin
  3. Gantry frame
  4. Automatic telescopic spreader

These design and safety parameters ensure that Kino Cranes straddle carriers deliver long service life, high reliability, and stable performance even in challenging port and terminal conditions.

Straddle carriers are an indispensable part of container logistics, combining lifting, transport, and stacking functions in a single versatile machine. Kino Cranes not only provides a full range of models (35t, 60t, and 80t, diesel or electric) but also ensures each straddle carrier is built to the highest structural and safety standards.
